Abstract

3D scan of a black smoker chimney from the Bismarck Sea. Black and white smokers are a diverse ecosystem in the darkness of the deep sea. They were only discovered in 1978 by the sea submergence vehicle Alvin. This specimen comes from the Bismarck Sea near Papua New Guinea. It was donated to the NHM Vienna in 2004 and still smells weakly of Sulphur.
