Abstract

3D scan of the 39 kilogram Hraschina iron meteorite (Medium octahedrite / IID), which is the founding specimen of the Vienna meteorite collection, the oldest in the world. Its fall was observed in Hraschina, near Zagreb, Croatia, on May 26, 1751. This piece of iron was first housed in the Imperial Treasury and in 1778 transferred to the Imperial Natural History Collection. The Hraschina meteorite provided the impulse to collect more “stones from the sky”, long before the extraterrestrial origin of meteorites was finally acknowledged in the scientific community.
