Abstract

3D scan of a giant tortoise from the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. For a long time, the giant tortoises of the Galápagos volcanic islands were seen as one species. Now they are considered to be separate species, most of which were eradicated in historic times. Chelonoidis abingdonii—of which one specimen is shown here—lived on Abingdon Island. This specimen was acquired by the NHM Vienna in 1914. This specimen was the first of this species to be kept in a zoo. It died at the London Zoo in 1914 and was later acquired by the NHMW.
